£6.1 million has been secured from the Levelling Up Fund and other sources to undertake significant improvement works to the route between the town centre and Turf Moor to make this area easier and more pleasant, especially for pedestrians. This work ties in with other projects in and around Burnley town centre, the expansion of the Canalside University Campus and an upgrade to Manchester Road Railway Station. The aim is to transform the link between the town centre, along Yorkshire Street to Burnley Football Club’s “home” at Turf Moor and forms part of the “regeneration corridor” from the Weaver’s Triangle through the shopping centre to the football stadium. The biggest change will be the junction of Yorkshire Street and Church Street where the current roundabout will be changed to traffic lights, improving pedestrian safety and traffic flows. Pavements will be made wider, new pedestrian crossings introduced, better street lighting, more landscaped areas and seating to improve safety and access, especially for those with young children, the disabled and visually impaired. Yorkshire Street aqueduct will be renovated, and Centenary Way pedestrian subway will be decommissioned with the approach ramp and steps levelled and landscaped. Work started in January 2023 and will be completed in summer 2024.
